Time: 6:30pm
Where: UAW Hall

Dubuque, IA
Other Info:
  • This is a COMMUNITY building Potluck so bring your favorite dish to share!
  • Beverages such as soda, coffee and beer (thank you FDR!) will be available for purchase through the United Auto Workers
  • Bring an example of a FDR policy from which we currently benefit and/or one that we are in danger of losing!
  • Bring an example of WPA projects in Iowa (there are many!)

When FDR took office in November 1932 the country was in the depths of fear and despair. The Great Depression brought widespread unemployment, failed banks and farm foreclosures. Lacking Agricultural policies resulted in droughts, dust storms and massive displacements of people in the Midwest. War, fascism and genocide was raging in Europe. BUT… up stepped Franklin Delano Roosevelt, bringing hope and leadership to our desperate country.

Through this PARTY we honor this great Champion of Democracy and his crowning achievements (among them Social Security, Progressive Taxation, Banking/Utility Regulation, Farm Policy, putting American back to work through the WPA and ending Prohibition – YAY!) the most important being… *HOPE*. Let’s make this event an opportunity to network, renew and forge social alliances to dispel fear, cynicism and isolation!

Finally, although FDR left us almost 72 years ago perhaps his unselfish display of Progressivism will be an inspiration for you also to LEAD?

“There is a mysterious cycle in human events. To some generations much is given. Of other generations much is expected. This generation of Americans has a rendezvous with destiny.” – Franklin Delano Roosevelt
